The coast of Fife contains many examples of caves cut into sandstone outcrops by the action of the sea, providing ready made shelters for local communities in the distant past. A multi-disciplinary project was established in 1997 which aims to construct a picture of the past use and present condition of these caves, some of which are under considerable threat from environmental processes and human interaction. While a few of Fife's sea caves have been studied in considerable detail, the majority have been neglected by academic study, even though some have played an important role in local and national history. One of the many aims of the Sea Caves of Fife project has been to raise the level of study of the neglected caves to approximate that of those which have been studied in depth. Other aims include mapping and surveying endangered caves, identifying species of plants and animals living in the caves, and gathering together documentary evidence from past centuries concerning them.
