St John Fisher > ARTS COLLEGE

St John Fisher Catholic High School was the first school in North Yorkshire to be designated Arts College Status. This was the result of a community inspired effort undertaken with the financial backing of over 400 individual sponsors. The first stage of this project was to build a new Music block, the Keelan Centre, which provides the following facilities for our students and the community at large:
A large music room to facilitate orchestra practices
A music ICT suite of computers
A digital recording studio
Individual practice rooms
Gallery for exhibitions of student Art
We have also developed and re-furbished a modern 120 seater Auditorium/dance studio suitable for the smaller productions, complementing the facilities provided by the Hall for major productions.
In addition to the three Art rooms we now have a series of small studios dedicated to Sixth Form Art Student use.
A computer graphics room has also been created as part of the Arts suite. Not only does the School benefit from the Status but so do our family of Primary Schools and the community at large, as these facilities are made available to them. This exciting project extends participation in the Arts and continues to enhance the self-esteem and confidence of our pupils. The Arts nourish the spirit and enable students to express feelings, ideas and beliefs and foster skills such as team building and problem-solving, which are valuable to young people whatever their career routes.
Our school is alive with exciting projects and initiatives. Arts Status gives the opportunity for professional artists in residence to work with our students in all fields of the Arts. Arts clubs flourish at all levels and provide opportunity for all students throughout the school. Whether it is in the Samba Band or Chamber Choir, in fashion shows, in full musical productions, in street or contemporary dance, art workshops or textiles, Shakespeare of Ayckborne, Theatre trips or Concert tours, there is always something new, exciting and stimulating to experience.
We believe that the Arts enrich the experience and enjoyment of the school. They challenge creativity, instil self-discipline and therefore support the progress and achievement of our students. Taking the Arts into the community is an important feature of our work. SIP students willingly share their talents with children at other schools and links are strongly encouraged.
We have recently formed a community choir for adults who are interested in singing for pleasure. Local groups share our facilities. Members of the school look forward to annual educational tours abroad. Recent venues include Barcelona, Paris, St Petersburg and future tours are being planned to far off places such as Canada, Australia and South Africa. Not surprisingly, our commitment to the Arts was recently recognised by The Arts Council of Great Britain, after completing a major audit and we received the Artmark Silver Award.
