Welcome to the Maths Section

Mathematics forms part of the core curriculum at Redwood Park school.  It is a powerful tool which will enable our pupils to communicate, function and thrive in all aspects of their lives.

The mathematics scheme of work is designed to fulfil two purposes:-

1)

Progress pupils’ mathematical ability within the framework of the National Curriculum

2)

Give pupils a range of strategies and techniques that can be applied to all aspects of their lives.

To do this mathematics is taught within themed units at KS3 so the pupils can see the relevance of what they are being taught.  Where possible real life data and contexts are used, with reinforcement in the shape of homework task and challenges.

A wide variety of text is used alongside a practical approach that takes account of both the National Strategy.

We strive to:-

1)

Motivate and challenge pupils.

2)

Develop positive attitudes to each other, the subject and the environment,

3)

Provide confidence and competence in the use of mathematical tools which include....

a)

Calculators

b)

Computers

c)

Interactive Whiteboards

d)

Measuring and Drawing Instruments

4)

Enhance communication skills

5)

Further their ability to reason logically, classify and generalise as well as recall number facts.

6)

Provide all KS4 pupils with external accreditation to include GCSE foundation level for some pupils and AQA Unit Awards for all others.

7)

The Foundation Learning Tier of Functional Skills is also offered for all of KS4 along with Level 1 Functional Skills.

All pupils are assessed and tested regularly to inform planning, show progress and identify weak areas of the curriculum.

The BSquared assessment program is used to record levelling together with the access mathematics tests (on screen).
